1. Agreeing to these terms
Installing and using Kuokka means you accept these terms. If you do not, the remedy is simple: do not use the app, or delete it.
2. What Kuokka is
Kuokka is an independent client for Hacker News. It reads the public Hacker News API and adds reading tools on top: Radar watchlists, on-device summaries, reader mode, offline saving, comment navigation, widgets, bookmarks and search.
It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Y Combinator. "Hacker News" and related marks belong to their owner and are used here only to describe what the app reads.
3. No account
Kuokka has no sign-up and no login. Nothing you do in the app is tied to an identity we hold, and there are no credentials for you to keep safe with us.
4. Premium
Premium is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It does not renew and it will not charge you again. It removes ads, lifts the cap on summaries, and unlocks full Radar, For You recommendations, offline reading, comment digests and advanced search.
- The price is shown in the app before you buy and varies by region and currency.
- Billing runs through the App Store or Google Play. Neither we nor the app sees your payment details.
- Premium is tied to the store account that bought it. Use "Restore purchases" in the app after reinstalling or moving to a new device.
5. Refunds
Refunds are handled by whichever store processed the purchase, under that store's policy and the consumer rights of your region — Apple through reportaproblem.apple.com, Google through the Play Store's order history. We cannot issue a refund directly, but if something is broken, write to us and we will help.
6. Content from other people
Stories, links and comments in Kuokka are written and submitted by Hacker News users. We do not select, edit, endorse or verify any of it, and we cannot vouch for its accuracy or availability.
Summaries and comment digests are produced automatically. They condense; they can be wrong, and they can miss the point of a piece. Treat them as a way into an article, not a replacement for reading it.
7. Your own AI provider key
If you add a Gemini, Claude or OpenAI key, requests made with it are your requests, under your agreement with that provider, and any cost they carry is yours. Keep the key to yourself.
8. Fair use of the app
You agree not to:
- use Kuokka to break the law, or to breach the Hacker News terms it reads from;
- attempt to defeat the Premium entitlement checks or the store's purchase flow;
- redistribute content retrieved through the app as though it were yours to license.
9. Availability
Kuokka depends on a public API that we do not run. If Hacker News is down, slow, or changes shape, parts of the app stop working until it recovers or the app is updated. Features may also change or be retired between versions.
10. Disclaimer and liability
The app is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of it. Nothing here limits rights that your local consumer law gives you and does not allow to be waived.
11. Changes
These terms may change as the app does. The effective date above moves when they do, and continuing to use the app after a change means accepting the revised terms.
