Premium
I bought Premium and it is not showing
Open Account and tap Restore purchases. That re-checks the receipt with the App Store or Google Play. Make sure the device is signed in to the same store account that made the purchase — a family member's account or a second Apple Account is the usual explanation. If it still does not appear, email the store receipt and we will sort it out.
Do I pay again on my other phone?
No. Premium is a one-time purchase attached to your store account, so it restores on any device signed in to that account. It does not carry across from Android to iOS, though, because those are separate stores with separate purchases.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds go through the store that took the payment: Apple via reportaproblem.apple.com, Google via the Play Store order history. If something is broken, tell us first — a fix is usually faster.
Radar
What does Radar actually watch?
Keywords, domains, authors and whole sections. Add a watchlist from the Radar tab, using a preset or your own filters, and matching stories collect there as they appear on Hacker News.
When do digests arrive?
Free readers get an evening digest. Premium adds a morning and a lunchtime one. Digests are local notifications scheduled on the device, so allow notifications for Kuokka when the system asks, or nothing will arrive.
Summaries
Where do summaries come from?
By default they are produced on your phone. The summarizer is extractive — it picks out sentences that are already in the article rather than writing new ones — so it works offline, needs no API key, and sends nothing anywhere.
I have run out of summaries
The free tier includes three per session, and sharing a Radar brief banks two more. Premium removes the cap.
Can I use a real language model instead?
Yes. Add your own Gemini, Claude or OpenAI key in Settings and Kuokka will use that provider for summaries instead of the on-device summarizer. The key stays on your device, the requests are billed to your own provider account, and clearing the key returns summaries to the phone. Comment digests are a Premium feature either way.
Reading
Offline reading is not saving anything
Offline reading is part of Premium. With it active, save a story while you still have a connection and the article is kept for later; opening a story for the first time with no signal cannot work, because the article has to be fetched once.
The widget is not updating
Widgets refresh on a schedule set by the operating system — roughly every 30 minutes on Android and every 15 on iOS — and both platforms stretch that interval when the battery is low or power saving is on. Opening the app refreshes it immediately. Android offers four widget sizes and iOS three widget families.
Can I read in my own language?
The app is translated into 11 languages — English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Turkish, Indonesian, German, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Italian — and follows your system language. The stories themselves are whatever Hacker News posted, which is mostly English.
Something is broken
Email manulorenzop@gmail.com with:
- your device and OS version;
- the Kuokka version, shown at the bottom of Settings;
- what you did, what happened, and what you expected instead;
- a screenshot, if it is something you can see.
Crash reports arrive automatically if you allowed diagnostics, but they carry no note of what you were trying to do — so the description matters more than you would think.
Want a feature? Say so. The roadmap is shaped mostly by what people ask for twice.
